ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024- Teams, Venue, Format, & Rules

The 9th edition of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, 2024 promises to be an exciting and grand spectacle with a record-breaking number of teams participating in the tournament. The event is set to take place in the West Indies and the United States from June 1 to June 29.  

Amid stiff competition from some of the best cricketing nations in the world, the defending champions England will aim to retain their crown. 

Teams Participating in ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, 2024 

The 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup is a 4 weeks tournament which means that most of the big countries of the world are involved in the tournament. This will be the first time that the United States of America (USA) will be hosting any major ICC event on its soil. 

Zimbabwe is the only Test-playing nation who did not qualify from this tournament, as it failed to get through their qualifier tournament. 

There are 20 countries competing across 55 matches for earning the biggest prize in the  ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 champion. Teams will be divided into 4 groups of 5 teams each , which are as follows:- 

Group A consists of  Ireland, Pakistan, United States, India, Canada  

Group B consists of  England, Australia, Scotland, Namibia, Oman  

Group C consists of  New Zealand, Afghanistan, Uganda, Papua New Guinea, West Indies 

Group D consists of  South Africa, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Netherlands 

Format 

The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, will have two group-based rounds and a knockout round that will commence with the semifinals. 

In the initial group stage, the teams will be divided into four groups of five teams each. From each group, the top two teams will advance to the Super 8 at the end of round-robin style matches. 

Then the teams in both Super 8 groups (1 and 2) of four will also play each other, and the top two teams from each group will advance to the semifinals. 

The Super 8s will comprise the top-seeded nations, including Australia, England, New Zealand, West Indies, India, Pakistan, South Africa, and Sri Lanka. 

Venue for the Tournament 

9 venues have been carefully selected for the T20 World Cup tournament, with matches taking place in Florida, Antigua & Barbuda, Barbados, Guyana, Saint Lucia, New York, Texas, Trinidad & Tobago, and St. Vincent & the Grenadines.  

With the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York being specially constructed for the event, the tournament will showcase cricket’s growing popularity in the United States. 

Rules for ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 

Here’s a simpler explanation of the rules for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024: 

  1. It is a Twenty20 format. In a match, each team gets to bat for a maximum of 20 overs (120 legal deliveries) before they are bowled out or the overs are completed. 
  1. There will be special fielding restrictions for the first 6 overs of each innings called the powerplay, to encourage more scoring. 
  1. Each match is scheduled to last around 3 hours and 10 minutes. Both side teams will get 85 minutes (1hr 25mins) to bat, with a 20-minute break in between the two innings. 
  1. For the first time in the Twenty20 cricket tournament, there is an introduction of the ‘stop-clock’ rule. The bowling team, as per the rule, must be ready to start the next over within 60 seconds of the previous over ending. 
  1. Each team can request a review of the umpire’s decision twice per innings if they disagree with a call. 
  1. A ‘super over’ will be played if the scores are tied after the 20 overs. Each team gets to face 6 legal deliveries, and the team scoring more runs wins. If the super over also finishes with a tie, more super overs will be played until the winner is decided. 
  1. In the group stages, a minimum of 5 overs per team must be completed for a result to be decided. This minimum is increased to 10 overs per team for the semi-finals and final. 
  1. If a match cannot be completed due to weather interruptions after the minimum overs, the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method will be used to determine the winner based on the scored runs and resources available. 
  1. The first semi-final and the final have a reserve day in case of a washout. However, an additional 250 minutes of time will be allocated on the same day if required for the second semi-final. 
  1. India will play the second semi-final match, if they qualify for the semi-finals.
